Research Investigation on Domestic Tragedy Essay Example For Students

Research Investigation on Domestic Tragedy Essay Tragedy is a form of drama based on human sufferings, where the protagonist is unable to achieve his goal due to moral weakness, tragic flaw, or the ability to cope with changed circumstances. In a classical tragedy, this main character used to always be an aristocrat, or of a very high social status. How ever, with the change of social norms and hierarchy, a new type of tragedy developed; domestic tragedy. Domestic tragedy became more and more popular throughout the 19th century, as it tackled the problems within society on a domestic level. Previously, the famous theorist Aristotle stated that in tragedy the downfall of the protagonist would be more devastating to the audience if the character was noble, and that comedy was to depict middle-class citizens. In 1880s and 1890s a movement of strong feministic thinking emerged throughout Europe. The new woman evolved. To the dislike of many men, this new profile of a woman changed the traditional order of society. With this change, playwrights did not want to write story lines that were sentimental and sensational, with unrealistic sets and melodramatic acting. They wanted to be realistic, portray the current world they lived in and portray problems of society at that time. First of all, the protagonist is a domestic tragedy is an ordinary person, part of the middle-class or even a lower-class individual. Unlike most other types of tragedy, and especially classical, the main character is an anti-hero. This means that the central character lacks conventional heroic attributes. The protagonist thus is imperfect, making the story be more realistic and easier to identify with. Instead of the beautiful and gentle Juliet and the heroic Romeo who fall in love at first sight, Ibsen introduced the troubled couple of Nora and Torvald Helmer and their relationship issues. Everyday people could enjoy domestic tragedy more as classical tragedy, because they could see a reflection of their life in such plays and characters. Following this, as the name of this type of tragedy already hints, the setting is mainly based at the home of a character or in a familiar surrounding such as the workplace. This enables the audience to focus on the family or the people they are close around, and their behavior, responses and actions less influenced by outside factors. Through this, the playwright achieves to demonstrate a family or a couple, which do not fit into the model for a stereotypical family. In addition to that, the set is very realistic to the corresponding time period. Having a realistic set, facilitated the identification with characters even more. Adding on to this, the costumes and make up corresponded to the fashion at that time, another factor that facilitated the identification with the characters. The costume indicated various social problems, such as poverty and domestic violence. Furthermore, the text of a domestic drama follows a specific model in order to stay in this genre. The subject of such a drama, has to be the issue of regular, normal people. These subjects can include most matters reaching from human rights to poverty. Generally the structure of a domestic tragedy is linear, with a patriarchal character representing the family. This patriarchal figure demonstrates the natural everyday subjects. Also, confrontations with such a figure are a popular structure in domestic tragedy. The language used is non sophisticated, rather simplistic filled with common slang. Such a use of language firstly enables everyone to be able to understand the characters lines, as normal tragedies, like Romeo and Juliet which was hard to comprehend by ordinary people. Secondly, such a familiar and traditional use of language again encourages the audiences interaction and identification. A specific dialect, and common expression, furthermore reinforces this realistic impress ion on the audience as it is a very personal and reassuring way of communication. .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .postImageUrl , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:hover , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:visited , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:active { border:0!important; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:active , .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4ca04a286081426597612781a5001cef:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Describe and Analyse Two Dramatic Moments EssayIn conclusion, one can see, domestic tragedy is a very different type of tragedy. The Secret To Increasing Student Engagement In A Classroom

Increasing classroom engagement is every teachers goal. While there are many up and coming edtech tools that support teachers and increase student engagement, many teachers have come up with creative DIY classroom solutions themselves. We asked some teachers to share their creative methods; here are a few: Design Puzzles Paula Burgess, Math Teacher at Hume-Fogg Magnet High School (Nashville, TN): My seniors in trigonometry have been working on a mathematical design project (involving empty cardboard rolls) that will not only enhance their math skills, but also give them an opportunity to present their designs to second graders as part of a project-based learning activity. We are making puzzle pieces to create a mathematical design using empty cardboard rolls.Lost at Sea Marshmallow ChallengeMike Provitera, Business Professor at Barry University (Cutler Bay, FL), Management Consultant, Book Author: Two exercises that I like to use often in the classroom and in consulting are: The Lost At Sea exercise: People select from a group of items and figure out which to use first in rank order if they were lost at sea. After the exercise is complete, the correct ranking and the reasoning behind it is revealed. The Marshmallow Challenge: In my book, I discuss The Marshmallow Challenge, an 18-minute exercise that groups 4 to 5 people together to create the highest structure using 20 pieces of spaghetti, a yard of string and tape, and one marshmallow. I use this as an instructive design exercise because it encourages teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation, and creativity. It’s also a lesson in incentives and skill sets: good incentives plus low skills does not necessarily equal success.SurvivorKristen Fusaro-Pizzo, 10th and 12th Grade English Teacher at Staten Island Technical High School (NY): To keep my students engaged, I started playing Survivor in my classroom seven years ago, and it has become my signature. Classes are divided up into teams, and they last the length of a curriculum unit. During the game, teams are awarded points based on classroom participation, scores on quizzes/exams/projects, and classroom challenges. The team with the mos t number of points at the end of the unit wins a prize, usually gift cards to a local coffee shop. TabooShaneequa Cannon, Former Classroom Educator at Young Womens Preparatory Academy (Miami, FL): I was a high school English Language Arts teacher for over a decade. I found vocabulary to be instrumental to my students’ academic and professional development, so I adapted Taboo. The vocabulary words we studied were the main item the students had to guess while the keywords and phrases from the textbook definitions were on the taboo list as well. Students had to find another way to describe their vocabulary words, deepening the understanding of the use and the meaning behind the words. Each student created three vocab taboo cards; they loved it when someone couldn’t guess their word because they made the card hard. Did you know provides free access to educators?
